Own a Home in New York? You Might Get a STAR Check in 2025

If you own a home in New York, you may be eligible for a STAR stimulus payment in 2025, helping you save on property taxes when every dollar counts.

The School Tax Relief (STAR) program was originally designed to reduce your school tax bill directly.

However, it now functions as a credit system, meaning you pay your taxes upfront, and then receive a STAR check or direct deposit later from the state.

How Does the STAR Program Work?

There are two main types of STAR benefits for New York homeowners:

1. STAR Credit

  • If you are registered for the STAR credit, New York’s Department of Taxation and Finance mails you a STAR check each year or sends a direct deposit.

  • You can use this credit to offset your school taxes.

  • You qualify if:

    • You own your home and it is your primary residence.

    • The combined income of the owners and their spouses is $500,000 or less.

2. STAR Exemption

  • Homeowners who have received the STAR exemption since 2015 can continue receiving it on their primary residence.

  • Instead of a check, your school tax bill is reduced by the exemption amount each year.

  • To remain eligible, you must continue using the property as your primary residence and meet income requirements.

Who Qualifies for a STAR Payment in 2025?

To receive a STAR check in 2025, you need to:

  • Own a home in New York as your primary residence

  • Meet income limits, which vary by program:

For Basic STAR:

  • No age restriction and a primary residence required

  • Income limit:

    • STAR Credit: $500,000 or less

    • STAR Exemption: $250,000 or less

For Enhanced STAR:

  • At least one homeowner must be 65 or older

  • Income limit:

    • $107,300 or less for 2025 benefits

    • $110,750 or less for 2026 benefits

When Will You Get Your STAR Check?

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has launched an online tool to check your STAR payment status and see when checks are mailed in your municipality, as mailing schedules vary by location.

It is important to check your eligibility and payment status to plan your property tax relief effectively.

Why This Matters for Homeowners

With rising housing costs and property taxes, the STAR program can offer crucial relief, putting money back into your pocket for other essential expenses.

Whether you’re a first-time homeowner or have lived in your home for decades, checking your STAR eligibility could help you claim hundreds in tax savings each year.

Next Steps: Check Your Eligibility Today

  1. Visit tax.ny.gov to check your STAR status.

  2. Ensure your mailing address and direct deposit information are updated to avoid delays.

  3. Share this guide with other New York homeowners so they can benefit from the STAR program too.
