Free Utility Assistance in Clayton, Henry, and Fayette Counties: Ensuring Warmth During Cold Weather

As freezing temperatures grip the metro Atlanta region, many residents are faced with the challenge of keeping their homes warm while dealing with soaring utility bills.

However, there is hope for those in Clayton, Henry, and Fayette counties, where a program is offering free utility assistance to ensure that everyone stays warm and comfortable this winter season.

The Clayton County Community Services Authority (CSA) has launched a utility bill relief program to provide much-needed support to individuals and families who are struggling to pay their electric, water, and gas bills.

Program Director Brooke Chestnut explained that the response to the emergency utility relief program has been overwhelming. Despite experiencing a high number of registrations in a short period of time, Chestnut assures that there is still assistance available for those in need.

"We want to make sure that our clients are able to heat their homes during this winter season," Chestnut said. "We'd like to lower the energy burden and provide relief for gas, electric, or propane bills."

The CSA has been offering utility bill relief through grants from the Georgia Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for over 50 years. Last year alone, the program successfully served more than 10,000 homes.

The impact of the initiative goes beyond financial savings, as Chestnut shared heartwarming stories of clients breaking down in tears and expressing gratitude for the assistance they've received.

Starting on December 1, the CSA will direct its focus towards assisting individuals aged 65 and above. Verline Hoke, a 70-year-old resident, understands the challenges faced by seniors on fixed incomes.

"The majority of seniors do not receive a good social security package, and many of them do not have pensions," she said. "This program helps them alleviate the stress of choosing between paying their bills or buying food and medicine."

To qualify for the program, individuals must meet certain income guidelines. Upon acceptance into the program, participants receive a stipend based on their income, which can be used to offset their outstanding utility bills or applied as a credit.

The CSA not only provides utility assistance but also offers a range of additional support services. These include:
  • a food pantry
  • rental assistance
  • educational assistance
The organization seeks to empower individuals and families by addressing their immediate needs while also providing resources to help them achieve long-term stability.

Seniors and those who are medically homebound can schedule appointments starting on December 1, while all other eligible residents can begin applying for the LIHEAP program in January 2024. Walk-ins are also accepted at the CSA's office located at 1000 Main Street in Forest Park.

As temperatures continue to drop, the need for utility assistance becomes increasingly critical. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Clayton County Community Services Authority, residents of Clayton, Henry, and Fayette counties can find relief and ensure their homes remain warm and comfortable during the winter season.
