Empowering Low-Income Families in Mobile: How $4.45 Million Will Help with Energy Costs

Financial relief is on the way for low-income residents in Mobile, Alabama, thanks to a $4.45 million grant awarded to Mobile Community Action (MCA).

This funding is part of $44.5 million allocated to Alabama Community Agencies under the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), designed to help families struggling to cover their utility bills.

For households at or below 125% of the poverty line, LIHEAP offers more than just monetary aid—it provides a lifeline for families battling the challenges of seasonal energy costs.

Meeting Energy Needs Year-Round

Lakeisha Williams, MCA’s Community Outreach Coordinator, explained the program’s dual focus on winter heating and summer cooling.

For the first time this year, LIHEAP has adjusted its support timelines to better align with Mobile’s unique climate.

Heating bill assistance will extend through April, while cooling bill coverage will kick off in May and continue through September.

This flexible approach ensures that families aren’t left struggling during Alabama’s long, hot seasons.

More Than Just Financial Aid

The program also goes beyond paying bills. LIHEAP offers options like extending utility bill due dates for qualifying households, providing a buffer for families under financial strain.

These practical measures are essential in helping residents maintain stability during difficult times.

But the impact of LIHEAP isn’t limited to financial relief—it’s also a community effort.

MCA is encouraging residents to actively participate in the program by joining advisory councils, helping shape initiatives that directly address local needs.

How to Access Assistance

If you or someone you know might qualify for LIHEAP assistance, now is the time to act.

Reach out to Mobile Community Action to learn more about eligibility, application deadlines, and how the program can help your household.

This grant ensures that Mobile’s most vulnerable families can keep their homes comfortable year-round, easing the financial burden of rising energy costs.

By leveraging this funding, MCA is not just supporting families—it’s empowering a community.

Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to essential energy resources, no matter the season.
