The Universal Basic Income Proposal Will Shock You

WASHINGTON - Universal basic income (UBI) is a government program in which every adult citizen receives a set amount of money regularly. The goals of a basic income system are to alleviate poverty and replace other need-based social programs that potentially require greater bureaucratic involvement.

As proposed and if triumphant, the UBI would guarantee monthly payments of up to $1,200 per month for adults and $600 for kids. The program is estimated to cost $876 billion annually.

The House introduced two bills, SUPPORT and GPI, to bring the UBI idea into existence. The bills will create a program to fund local UBI tests and establish a new economic metric to measure well-being.

The Sending Unconditional Payments to People Overcoming Resistances to Triumph (SUPPORT) Act will create a guaranteed income program of up to $1,200 per month for adults, and $600 for kids, following pilot programs in localities nationwide. The Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) Act will provide an alternative economic metric to supplement GDP calculations and revamp our economic policy lenses by including overlooked socioeconomic and environmental costs and benefits of economic productivity.

"The wealthiest country in the world is not living up to its promises," said Rep. Dwight Evans (D-PA). He went on saying that Americans need help with both material needs like food and shelter as well emotional ones such as stability at home or work if they are able but suffer from poverty because of an ever changing economy where one job may not provide enough income for two people who want nothing more than basic sustenance while also having some left over each month after paying bills just so there will be something available when payday comes along again next week.
