Apply Starting November 18: Low-Income Energy Assistance Program for Winter Heating Costs

Winter in Kansas can be harsh, and when temperatures drop, heating bills can soar.

But if you're struggling to cover those costs, help is available.

Starting Monday, Nov. 18, applications will be accepted for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) for qualifying households.

The program offers a one-time benefit each year to assist with heating expenses, making it easier for low-income residents to stay warm through the colder months.

Important Dates to Remember and Eligibility

The LIEAP application period runs until March 31, 2025, so there's time to apply—but don’t wait!

To qualify, your household must earn at or below 150% of the federal poverty level.

Assistance amounts are based on factors such as household size, income, type of heating fuel, and utility rates.

Here’s a quick look at the 2025 Income Eligibility Guidelines:

  • 1 person: Monthly income up to $1,882.50
  • 2 people: Monthly income up to $2,555.00
  • 3 people: Monthly income up to $3,227.50
  • 4 people: Monthly income up to $3,900.00
  • 5 people: Monthly income up to $4,572.50
  • 6 people: Monthly income up to $5,245.00
  • 7 people: Monthly income up to $5,917.50
  • 8 people: Monthly income up to $6,590.00
  • +1 person: Add $672.50 for each additional person

How to Apply?

To help make the process easier, the Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF) will host in-person sign-up events across the state.

Locations and times for these events can be found here. You can also apply online starting Nov. 18 at DCF’s website.

When you apply, be ready to provide the following:

  • Completed LIEAP application
  • Proof of income (earned and unearned) for all household members
  • Copies of utility bills (gas, electric, propane, etc.)
  • Proof of child support payments (if applicable)
  • Rental agreement (if in subsidized housing)
  • Additional documents if claiming self-employment or receiving benefits like SSA/SSI

Last Year’s Impact

In 2024, over 40,000 Kansas households benefited from this program, with the average payment reaching $645.

If you're eligible, this assistance can make a significant difference in covering your winter heating costs.

Don’t Miss Out on This Help

With rising heating costs and unpredictable weather, LIEAP can help alleviate the financial burden.

Apply starting Nov. 18, and stay warm this winter without worrying about your heating bill.
